London-based artist finds a geometry for nature
My work is from the landscape and is heavily informed by the strong light and sweeping space of Australia. I work directly from nature and use the studio to develop these images onto canvas in an attempt to distil the illustrative elements of landscape into a painting that is symbolic of a place remembered.
Distant views and detailed fragments can share the same space – and landscapes of different countries are often integrated in my paintings. I hope to arouse the memory of a place rather than literally represent it in my work.
“White finds a geometry for nature. She orders this into increasingly more abstract paintings which remain rooted in the observed world. Her work reflects the visual drama of her subject matter with its constantly changing focus on and reassessment of space. The tension between edges can be felt as well as seen, as colour slides against colour and shape echoes shape.” Eileen Hogan
